I briefly bought a subscription to Newspapers.com. Just access to all the obituaries found there made it well worth the price. But the real enjoyment, and a few giggles, came from finding some rather unusual references to relatives.
Arthur Patrik Kallman was my Dad's paternal cousin. I had heard my Dad mention that he had cousins "up North" but I really had no idea where and to be honest no interest either as a kid. I just periodically heard the names Arthur, Evald and Evert Kallman and knew my Dad had visited with them on occasion but it was just through my grandparents. If I met any of them I certainly don't remember as our families were not close. Through news clippings I did find out quite a bit about the brothers and was lucky enough to meet a Kallman second cousin of mine not that long ago. A lovely woman who I met for lunch. We shared some family history and photos.
News clippings informed me that Arthur was a minister. His obituary gave me a bit more family history info but the real "kick" were the editorials Arthur actually took the time to submit to the paper. Mostly he ranted against sin and communism but this next one is by far my favorite.
Oh, come on Arthur, everyone speeds now and again, if not on purpose then inadvertently while daydreaming or such. Perhaps he was thinking on what his next Sunday sermon should be? And what is the purpose of posting your "innocence" in the editorial column? Did he seriously think THIS would get him a partial refund? Cry me a river Art, just pay the darn ticket!
your unsympathetic cousin once removed,
