In the early 20th century my paternal grandparents, Richard Kallman and Lydia Abrahamson, immigrated from Sweden, coming to a new life in Chicago. I've been researching my family for over twenty five years. In this blog I will share the family history, photos, documents and stories that I have collected, along with my memories of growing up Scandinavian-American in Chicago. Welcome to My Swedish-Chicago Heritage!

A Trip Through New York City in 1911
1911 New York footage taken by the Swedish company Svenska Biografteatern on a trip to America:
These were the years our grandparents arrived in the U.S. The years Ellis Island was in operation. I cannot even imagine how thrilling and frightening it must have been to come from a small rural Swedish village, depart from Ellis Island to this? Not to mention speaking a different language? They were some determined and hardy folk. I don't know if I could have done it myself.
