One hundred and ten years ago this month, great uncle Gustaf Abrahamsson married Hanna Emanuelsdotter in Ulricehamn, Älvsborg, Sweden. Hanna had previously gone to America. Home for a visit she must have decided a life back home in Sweden with great uncle Gustaf was more to her liking.
On land given to him by his father, Gustaf built their home, "Aveholm". They would have four children, Seth, Gunhild, Sara and Margareta.

As Gustaf wasn't a member of the state church they couldn't marry in the Östra Frölunda church, so they had to go to the mayor's. The mayor in Borås was the nearest, 53 km / 33 miles. Gunhild didn't know why they went to Ulricehamn instead, 65 km / 40 miles. Maybe they thought that town was more romantic. It certainly is cuter and more beautiful, at least in my eyes. They travelled there by horse, why wouldn't they? Cars were still rare those days.
The picture of Aveholm gives a glimpse of Hanna's American history. She thought the windows in the new world were more practical than the Swedish ones. Thus when planning for their new home they went all in and ordered windows from the US. Quite impressing in those days when freight service over the Atlantic was slow and cargo fees certainly not very cheap.
Another thing Hanna brought from "over there" was the skill to make icecream. I guess her kids must have been very proud to have the only mother in the community who could serve such a treat for their parties! How long that difference lasted, though, I don't know, as I believe Hanna didn't keep the recipie secret for her friends.

The Alma you referred to was my paternal grandmother. Yes, she lived the rest of her life in Chicago, except for a brief visit back to Sweden when she was young.
