Suffragettes of Chicago's Swedish Woman's Club

"The laws and statues of Illinois declare that criminals, lunatics, idiots, persons of unsound mind and women shall not exercise the right of franchise. The women of Sweden have voted for every officer their husbands, sons, fathers or brothers have voted for and we Swedish women who have become Swedish-Americans are asking the Lord to give us  an understanding to do our duty in this country - to awaken a deeper and stronger love for the country in which we live." -  Mrs. Emmy Evald, President

The Chicago Tribune Sun Feb 13, 1898 p.38

Swedish American women of the Chicago Swedish Women's Club were part of the movement to give  women the right to vote. In Sweden some women could vote in local elections as early as 1862 although universal franchise  was not until 1921 (the 19th amendment gave American women that right in 1920).
