Prompt #25 (Jun 18-Jun 24): "Trains" - Albin Richard Kallman
I only met my uncle Albin a handful of times as he and his family left Chicago and moved to California in the early 1940's. As an adult my brother visited him, spoke with him a bit about his life, and learned an interesting fact.
Albin only had an 8th grade education. He also came of age during the great depression. In his youth, before he married, he thought he would try his luck out in California where he had some extended family living. Having nothing and nothing to lose how did he make his way to California?
He hopped a freight!
From Amy Johnson Crow, a genealogist, far more experienced then I. "The data that we've accumulated in our genealogy software and in our binders and folders doesn't do a whole lot of good just sitting there. We need to do something with it." Each week she sends out a prompt to share a bit about an ancestor, collateral relative, or family friend.
