Yes, my grandmother Lydia. Eighteen years old, she was the first of her family to head for America. Why, we can only guess. Adventure? Fun? Her loving yet religious family possibly seemed too confining? As a woman she had few choices for her future life? Find a husband, where one was unavailable to her in the small community of home? Did she buy "America's streets are paved with gold" rumor? I really don't know what her thoughts and dreams had been, but I wish I did.
